PART FIVE: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Agent Ki sat down roughly beside Hadji, watching the young boy's
un-moving face closely. It had been nearly eight hours since the Quests had disappeared,
and since Hadji had opened a portal to the Negaverse. Ki reached into his suit pocket and
pulled out his appointment book, leafing through it, trying to find something to do.
He was board to the point of insanity. "Are you still alive,
Hadji-san?" he asked, out of spite, crossing his legs in front of him.
"Yes, Agent Mie," Hadji answered calmly, still deep in meditation. Hadji
paused a bit, his form never moving from the perfect lotus position he sat in. "I think
theyare coming back."
Ki leapt to his feet immediately, surveying the portal before him,
watching its rippling surface for any sign of movement. The gently flowing surface glowed
back at him for a moment before its iridescence was suddenly disturbed, rippling violently
like a thrown rock would a calm lake. And a leg emerged.
Race Bannon stepped calmly out of the portal, his daughter tagging
closely behind him. He was a mess! His shirt and pants were ripped wide open in several
places, hanging in shreds about his body. His once neat and cut white hair now stuck out
at odd angles like he had just got out of bed , and dirty smudges crossed his face and neck.
Dr. Quest came out next, looking just as bad, tugging along the portable
QuestWorld system with him.
"Aiyah!" Ki exclaimed, stepping forward. "You two are a complete
disaster! What happened?"
"Let's just say ... 'you wouldn't believe us if we told you.' " Jonny
said ,emerging next, followed closely by 9 women all in short sailor uniforms, and a man
in a full three-piece black suit and cape.
Hadji opened his eyes slowly, letting the portal fizzle out. He let
his gaze fall around the group as he got to his feet, stunned at the sight of the large group
of worn people before him. With curious eyes, he glanced each Sailor Scouts with a
puzzled look. "Your numbers seem to have multiplied. What has happened to you all?"
"Don't ask, Hadj ... but I've got an EXCELLENT idea for a new
QuestWorld program!!" Jonny smiled widely.
Race, Dr. Quest and Jessie all groaned loudly.
"What?" Jonny asked, innocently.
"Man! I'm starved! Where's the best place for food around here?"
Race laughed.
Usagi practically inhaled her hamburger and fries at a local sidewalk
cafe. She sat gobbling down everything in sight, the Quest team looking on in sheer
amazement at the spectacle.
Jessie leaned coyly over to Jonny and tapped him on the shoulder.
"And I thought YOU had bad table manners," she whispered, watching as Usagi downed
a chocolate shake in one gulp.
"Hey!" Jonny yelled through a mouthful of ramen. He conjured up
the meanest look he could, but just ended up looking like a big fool with miles of
Chinese noodles hanging out his mouth.
One of the older women leaned forward, her dark green hair falling
down behind her shoulders. "You two wouldn't happened to be related, would you?" she
pointed to Jonny and Usagi.
"Ha ha ... " and he took another big mouthful of ramen, nearly
loosing hischopsticks in the process.
"Nah ... I don't think they're related," Jessie put in, leaning
back in thebooth. "But I'll bet you anything their brain capacities are about the
same," Jessie laughed.
The entire table burst into hysterics, Jonny and Usagi both as lost
as they could be. "What's so funny?" they both chimed in at the same time.
The table erupted once again in to mass hysteria.
It was close to four in the morning, eastern standard time,
when the Quest team wobbled in the front door of the Quest Compound. Bags, supplies and
other pieces of luggage were piled on the kitchen floor quickly, and everyone gave a
huge sigh of relief.
"I do believe home is where the heart is," Hadji smiled.
"Yeah, well the only thing I care about right now is getting
about two days worth of sleep! I could care less where my heart is, Hadj," Jonny yawned,
kicking off his shoes.
"We can all take care of the luggage tomorrow morning," Dr. Quest
said. "Until then ... "
RRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGG!!!!!
The phone went off, just inches from Dr. Quest's ear, sending every
drop of adrenalin pumping through
his veins. He cursed as he hit the speaker button on the phone, his ear beginning to ring from
the call "Hello ... this is Dr. Quest. How can I help you?"
"Yes, Dr. Quest ... " a Japanese accent came through the line. "Um. This is
Agent Kiko Mie, from Tokyo."
Jonny and Jessie groaned, met with a silencing finger as Race raised his
hand to his mouth.
"How can we help you, Mr. Mie?"
"Well ..you see, "he laughed slightly through the phone. " ... are you
planning a trip back to Tokyo soon? We've got another problem here." The entire room fell
flat.
